VISA - COVID/ Residence permits: the period of validity. The extension, initially fixed at 3 months, was extended to 6 months

Given the health context, the period of validity of residence permits held by foreign nationals is exceptionally extended by 6 months. The extension, initially fixed at 3 months, was extended to 6 months by the order of April 22 modifying that of March 25, 2020 taken in application of article 16 of the emergency law to deal with the Covid epidemic. 19.
This measure concerns the following visas which will have expired between March 16 and May 15, 2020:

  • long-stay visas;
  • residence permits, with the exception of those issued to foreign diplomatic and consular staff;
  • provisional residence permits;
  • receipts for residence permit applications.
  • The period of validity of asylum application certificates is extended by 90 days (3 months).

The reception of applicants for residence permits in the prefectures being suspended until further notice, this extension is automatic. It aims to limit travel while securing the presence of foreigners in a regular situation. When reopening the prefecture counters, applicants will be able to obtain more information concerning the procedures for regularizing requests and renewing receipts.
To know: it is however advised to the foreigners carrying an expired title profiting from this extension not to leave the French territory as they could risk to encounter difficulties when re-entering the French territory, certain countries having announced the closing of their terrestrial borders with France.
