How to report your income
Online declaration
Declaring online is easy and fast. You just have to connect to your particular space and let yourself be guided.
If your main residence is equipped with internet access, your income tax return must be completed online. However, if you feel that you are unable to do so, you may continue to use a paper return.
To connect to your particular space, you must have your tax number and password.
With FranceConnect, you can also connect by using one of the partner “digital identities”such as impots.gouv.fr, AMELI, La Poste or MobileConnect and me.
Haven't created your space yet?
To do this, you need to gather 3 elements:
- Your tax number
- Your online access number
- Your tax income "Revenu fiscal de référence" (Your reference tax income appears on your income tax notice received in 2019)
Then you just have to create your personal space and choose a password

The paper declaration must be filled in no later than midnight on Friday June 12, 2020, including for French residents abroad. - Stamp from post office will certify it.
Check your pre-filled information
Whether the declaration is automatic or classic, it is necessary to make sure that the information prefilled by the administration (taxable income and withholding taxes at source) is correct.
To do this, use the annual summary that can appear on your salary statement or pension statement for the month of December 2019 or on a specific document made available by your income payers.
In the absence of an annual summary, we invite you to total your taxable income and source deductions from your bulletins for the year.
You can also find the information on your direct debits in your particular space under "Manage my direct debits" (in French "Gérer mon prélèvement à la source")
Declaration in direct debit mode
You will find on your income tax form the detail of all the source deductions made in 2019.
In case this information is not exact, modify them:
- addition of a line of amounts "income / withholding tax" when you cannot find the information of income and withholding tax at the source of an income;
- modification of an amount: this allows you to correct the amount of income and / or withholding tax presented by the administration;
- deletion of an “income / source deduction” amount line if you dispute that a collector has paid taxable income to you (and deducted a source deduction).
You have a balance to pay: why and when?
The tax return that you make in 2020 allows you to take stock of your tax situation in 2019. Your declared elements allow the calculation of your tax and, once deducted the amounts that you have already paid with the withholding tax in 2019 .
3 cases may arise:
- you benefit from a refund, if for example you were overcharged in 2019 compared to the amount of your tax;
- you have nothing to pay;
- you have an amount to pay, if for example you did not pay enough in 2019, you benefited from a too large reduction advance or tax credit in January 2020 or if you did not change your rate withholding tax in 2019 following an increase in income.
If you benefit from a reimbursement, it will be reimbursed directly to the known bank account of the DGFiP, if you have communicated one, otherwise by mail with a check to be cashed directly with your bank.
If you have an amount of tax to pay, it will be debited from the bank account that you communicated to the DGFiP (viewable / modifiable in your particular space under the heading "Manage my direct debit"):
either in a single withdrawal on September 25, 2020 if the amount is less than € 300;
or in four monthly direct debits (from September to December) if the amount is greater than 300 €.
This tax return will also update your withholding tax rate for September 2020.
Declaring online : what if you made a mistake?
After signing your declaration online, you can still modify it if you wish, up to the declaration deadline.
After receiving your tax notice, you can still use "Correct my declaration online" in your private space, from the opening of the service until mid-December.
