Funny expression : "un coup de fil"

When you call someone by phone,

• In English you make a phone call
• In French, vous effectuez un appel téléphonique.

You may also hear someone say : je vais passer un coup de fil. If you translate literally 

• Un coup : a knock
• Un fil : a thread

So a thread knock!
